Community Sustainability
Sustainable Santa Fe Plan
The Sustainable Santa Fe Plan outlines the City’s program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to make the community more resilient to weather the changes that are inevitable from global warming in increased energy costs. Developed in response to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which the City adopted in 2006, this plan seeks to both reduce the City’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and to prepare the City to be resilient to the effects of both climate change and peak oil.
The Santa Fe Alliance is proud to be working with the City of Santa Fe Economic Development Division to implement the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan as it relates to local living economies and our current programs. We are working to:
- inform and educate the community about the Plan
- identify emerging green industries and help businesses fill gaps in the community
- build a regional food and fuel system for Northern New Mexico. Visit our Food and Farming page for more info on this project
Santa Fe County Sustainable
Land Development Plan
Santa Fe County has published a Sustainable Land Development Plan to be proactive about how we grow and shape our communities. The SLDP is a guiding document incorporating local community values, goals and strategies on how to best manage and sustainably utilize the County’s limited natural, economic, and cultural resources.
The Santa Fe Alliance is a partner with the Santa Fe County Growth Management Department and is currently working on the following issues:
- build a regional food and fuel system for Northern New Mexico, specifically in the areas of rural and urban agricultural economic development. Visit our Food and Farming page for more info on this project.
- Consulting with La Cienega and other communities to address local living economy issues for their own unique communities
You can learn more about the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan at their website. You can view the entire Sustainable Santa Fe Plan document here.
The Santa Fe Alliance supports sustainable community development and believes that:
- Neighborhood planning should be a part of the City’s sustainability efforts and should be tied to specific sustainability goals set out in the 2009 Santa Fe Sustainability Plan, such as reducing the need for auto travel, improving or maintaining aging-in-place strategies: at-home elder care, supporting the local economy, and supporting working families.
- District boundaries should be determined in a city-wide process, based on creating sustainable neighborhood units that proportionately include workplace and commercial uses.
The Santa Fe Alliance supports the goal of the City of Santa Fe becoming a top 50 green city through the implementation of the 2009 Sustainable Santa Fe Plan.
